    Miners are better than many
    By Simon Halley

its though out there in the mine fields and mountains. miners have to fine the minerals, then prove they the right stuff, raise funds from investors, negotiate a tangle of red tape, maybe pay a few bribes, and mobilize equipment and people before mining can start – maybe.

that is only the beginning, for then comes the real and heavy ongoing burden of responsibility. every modern mine becomes its own community and the mining becomes a mini-government for that community, assuming responsiblity for roads, transport, power, water, communications and similar infrastructure, health and medical care, education, and protecting and impoving the environment. it must do everything possible ensure safety for its personnel. it helps local community better their lifestyle.

it helps local farmers grow better crops and plantations. when the mining is over the company leaves the area in much better environmental shape then it was before the mine. the mining company is usually the biggest and often the only major taxpayer in the area. sometimes it builds the town hall (although its careful to remain in the shadows and defer to the local mayor, counselors and barangay officials).

the mine is often in a remote area, where none of these amenities were in place before the miner arrived. the local people sometimes lived at a tribal level, with their own culture, language and community rules. in fact often there was no community there and no local government. where there is an existing community, the miner still usually takes over many of the responsibilities normally the job of the government and often the miner does it better.

ironically, while carrying these burdens of responsibility, the miners frequently encounter opposition – from people wanting their share of gold, some church opponents and politicians, others with vested interests, and from leww-well-informed, easily influence locals.

there are valid historic reasons for some of the opposition. mining companyies have not always been good corporate citizens – in fact some of them were downright bad – but these were mainly yesteryear villians. today’s mining company in the Philippines generally understands and practices all the elements of responsible mining. in fact very few business sectors have to do this much work and carry this burden just in order to do business – especially in the Philippines.

similarly, very few other business sectors in the Philippines are such good corporate citizens. in the absence of proper consumer and people protection, companies in many fields (think of health, care, food, public transport, sweat-shop factories, for example) are still allowed get away with bad business practices. if they were made to follow the same rules that miners follow and carry similar responsiblity, the Philippines would be a much better, safer place.

    • Elizabeth says:

Mining does not leave the area in much better shape than it was before the miner arrived. That is a lie.

      http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KgO4-IuCa4c/SZy_aawqciI/AAAAAAAAAk8/XUvuWm-Fo24/s320/guinsaugon_landslide.jpg

Look at that the picture. Mining has left gaping hole where is no plants to hold the soil. This will create landslides that will destroy homes. It will pollute the water so it is not safe to drink. Mining is Palawan is not the answer to helping Philippine people but a way to poison or kill them.

In a news article by Dolly Agalay it was said that in 2006 Congressman Roger Mercado said residents had been advised to leave the village after weeks of heavy rain but he laid some of the blame on mining and logging in the area three decades ago. “They would not evacuate,” he said. “This is the effect of the logging before. Every time it rains there are flashfloods.”

It another article by the BBC News stated in the same year Philippines Congressman Roger Mercado, who represents Southern Leyte, has blamed the disaster, to some extent, on mining and logging in the area three decades ago, Reuters news agency reported. 200 lives were lost and many more homes ruined because of logging and mining.

Any indigenous culture will gone or drastically altered once the people who make up that culture have been affected. How many times have you heard phrase “mine to dangerous for rescue?” Mining will only create dangerous, temporary jobs instead of permanent ones found in eco-tourism, such as that found in Costa Rica, or sustainable farming practices found in Belize (http://belizebamboo.com/organic-farm-belize-sustainable-agriculture-belize-organic-farm-and-garden-belize-belize-video/tropical-ecology).

Read this story of the Philippine people vs. greedy miners: http://www.culturalsurvival.org/take-action/didipio-campaign/background-information-indigenous-communities-didipio if you want more proof of how mining can destroy.

Mining will remove whole mountain tops and endanger animals and provide them with no home. National Geographic named Palawan as one of its Top-20 destinations for 2011. It has 17 Key Biodiversity Areas and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are at risk from mining. Commerce and jobs from eco-tourism will be at stake. We do not need to destroy all this but should protect Palawan.

      No mining in Palawan!

I am very much agree to you that “Miners are better than many”. On the point that you have stated, all of them are true however try to weigh the effect to the environment it brings and try to be realistic. Try to visit the mining sites and try to examine those already abondoned mining places. You’ll see how the real scenario goes and how it looks like. The area who were abondoned by miners are less productive already and in fact gives harm to the entire people in the community. If your talking about TAX they contribute, then that is much lesser than what we are expected. They are just paying 2% tax. Only few are benefiting from mining and that includes those people who have power to allow this kind of industry without prior consideration to the society and future generations.

IT IS NOW TIME FOR US TO ACT…..!

      STOP THE MINING IN PALAWAN…….!!
STOP THE MINING IN OUR PHILIPPINES…!!

      BE THE PERSON WITH ACCOUNTABILITY..!
BE RESPONSIBLE CITIZEN OF OUR COUNTRY…!

    @mikaela,

  30. BS says:

Philippines have many rich mineral resources such as gold, silver, copper, nickel, etc. When these natural resources are properly explored, developed and transformed by the mining industry it will help accelerate the national progress and stability of our country. Also it will improve the quality of life of the Filipinos.
Mining industry plays a major part in progressive and rich nations to attain a better quality of life for the people.
If we stop mining operations in our country there will be big effects to employment generation and investment development in the country. It would be a disaster to the future of our country, and could be a hindrance in attaining economic stability for the country.

  43. Joanne says:

The environmental effects of mining are catasthropic and irreversible. Sulfuric acid leaches out metals and chemicals from the waste and creates acid mine drainage which:

    Contaminates lakes, rivers, and groundwater
Harms human health, fish, wildlife, and damages entire ecosystems
