The Save Palawan Movement launched the “No to Mining in Palawan” signature campaign
on February 3 in the hope of putting an end to mining activities in Palawan,
known as the Philippines’ Last Ecological Frontier.

The campaign aims to raise ten million signatures to deliver a strong message to the
Philippine and Palawan governments so that they would finally say no to mining in Palawan
and help protect one of the Philippines’ last remaining treasures.

Present at the launch were ABS-CBN Foundation Managing Director Gina Lopez, Palawan
Mayor Edward Hagedorn, “running priest” Fr. Robert Reyes, environment leaders Clemente
Bautista (Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment) and Atty. Jose Andres Canivel
(Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation), and Rhodora Angela Ferrer of the
Catholica Educational Association of the Philippines.

They were joined by Kabang Kalikasan ng Pilipinas (WWF-Philippines) president Jose
Lorenzo Tan, country director for Conservation International Romy Trono, Atty. Gerthie
Mayo-Anda of Environmental Legal Asistance Center, executive director of Palawan NGO
Network Inc. Atty Bobby Chan, Tanggol Kalikasan executive director Atty. Rolly Bisquera–
Sheen, Alyansa Tigil Mina national coordinator Jaybee Garganera and various leaders of the
environmental movement in the country.

The ten million signature campaign came about after the killing of Dr. Gerardo “Doc Gerry”
Ortega, a civic leader who championed the protection of Palawan’s rich biodiversity and an
outspoken critic of mining operations in Palawan.

Palawan has 40% of our country’s remaining mangrove areas, 30% of our coral reefs, at
least 17 Key Biodiversity Areas, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and eight declared
protected areas. Palawan has an unmatched variety of species of flora and fauna.
Nevertheless, the Palawan ecosystem is fragile, given the island’s narrow shape and its thin
layer of topsoil that is prone to erosion, which makes it unfit for mining.

Mining has been taking place in the province, despite Republic Act No. 7611, or the
Strategic Environmental Plan for Palawan, that states that all types of natural forests, areas
above one thousand (1,000) meters elevation, peaks of mountains or other areas with very
steep gradients, and endangered habitats and habitats of endangered and rare species
should be fully and strictly protected and kept free of human disruption.

Moreover, both the granting of mining permits and new applications are increasing, even in
core protection zones. Old-growth forests are being cut down, water sources are being
polluted, ancestral lands are being taken over, and communities’ pleas are being ignored.

In many areas of Palawan, the communities have already made their stand against mining
by showing that ecotourism, based on the protection of precious natural resources, can
provide the people with the livelihood they need for development. Many leaders also
believe that Palawan can develop and achieve economic progress without the devastating
environmental destruction caused by mining.

Doc Gerry, who also served as project manager for the ABS-CBN Foundation, dreamt of a
Philippines where natural resources are protected and nurtured. As he was always quoted to
say, “Di kailangan sirain ang kalikasan para mapakinabangan.” The Save Palawan
Movement hopes that through the campaign, Doc Gerry’s dream will live on and eventually

Filipinos from all walks of life are invited to sign the petition below and to ask their family
and friends to do the same. For more information on the Save Palawan signature campaign

Im not against protecting the nature but i certainly don’t agree how you attack all the mining company. I have been traveling to that place too and for the past few years i have seen many changes for the locals. Like them having JOB, PROPER HEALTH CARE, and they even have SCHOLARSHIP.
Back to the nature i think people should visit the place where there is mining before all of us react. Ask the locals as well. Now they have proper food at their table than killing a little poor monkeys and eat it. Mining companies are not evil lets stop being hypocrite. People benifits from it and most are the poor because they have jobs to support their family and speaking of mining. How do you generate power? BY BURNING COAL and where do you get it? OUT OF THE GROUND BY MINING.
Lets not close our eyes base on what people say but then investigate and know what is the truth first. We are all going to the toilet already beacuse of ignorance and people that trying to prove they are hero and so smart are the people we often believe. Most of them are just trying to protect their own pockets by attacking and using the poor but then dont do nothing for them at the end.

    • Gina Lopez says:

I agreee Sally its not enough to say no to Mining. . We have alternatives. Community based systanable eco tourism cna give the schools and the scholarships and address poverty without having to destroy the environment. I suggest you go to to an eco tourism site – and then compare how people are better…. So you have a few that benefit in the mine site (although the UP story shows that the incidence of poverty in the mining sector is the highest n the country) and create suffering to the communities around – and compare that to tourism where there is a domino effect.. where the peope in the site benefit, then the farmers benefit, the peoplle doing handicrafts benefit.. the periphery of benefits is much much more in tourism. Why are the poorest areas in the country mining areas. iif mining is so good why has it not spilled into the economy. Bataraza which has had mining for 36 years! has doublt the incidence of poverrty (53%) than the national average (26%) Go to Surigao…. see how the peole are suffering, or see Cagayan – how people have suffered due to deforestation. the fact is miningcannot happen with uprooting the trees. And any kind of deforestation in islands, or disaster prone areas – is just not good. So many people suffer. They have in the past.. there is a beter way.

  3. can i have your email address ma’am/sir i want to send you some issue about illegal demolition

  4. This is Mr. Fernando G. Bermoy President of Lumbia Tribal Association of Palalan Lumbia Cagayan de Oro City.
This morning I viewed GINA of Save Palawan Movement in the Umagang kay ganda. We want to know some details of said movement especially that we are also involved in advocacy against illegal mining in Mindanao in partnership of members of Amnesty International.
We want also urgent help from your movement as our tribal land (111.141 hectare CARP-Awarded property in Palalan Lumbia Cagayan de Oro City) was surprisingly bought by a certain DIANA G. BIRON of Pasig City now represented by former Congressman ROLEX SUPLICO of Ilo-ilo.
Without our consent and without DAR clearance, subject to land was taken over by them by forced using threats, intimidation and armed security guards and unidentified armed escorts , burned our mango plantation, demolished all our houses , destroyed our farms and eventually drove us away without any court order.
Our Model organic farm – a model in Mindanao on organic farming technology where the IPs in Mindanao are being trained was also destroyed to include our ecunimical worship center. Please help us spread our youtube message: www. Youtube.com Justice for farmers : Uploaded by PCFMPC.

Balance everything first before you do something… Hindi lhat ng magmimina ay para lng sa sariling kpakanang ng management who runs the mining. Sa hirap ng buhay d2 sa Pilipinas, hndi lhat nkkapasok sa mga offices or establishment sa bansa natin.

  10. bobong pNoy says:

di ba malakas ang ABS-CBN kay PNoy? eh bakit hindi kayo lumapit sa kanya?…ano yan, lilikom kayo ng 10 mil na signature tapos kunwari hindi pa rin mapipigilan ang mining tapos biglang eksena si Pnoy na parang here i come to save the day ang dating!….sus!!!

  11. with this single vote i believe that this may give a help in saving Philippines, in saving the world!

  12. Eduardson Martinez Monforte says:

No 2 mining in Palawan? I heard it to my friend (jheo). Mr. Jheo is a very environmentalist. As per my opinion regarding this matter, mining is a very self-centered profession of a man. They make much money without thinking of harsh result to our flora and fauna. As we can see, those people who conducted this type of profession did not promote saving our nature campaign. As we go through, the devastated nature are increasing in area because “some” government leaders allowed them to do mining. Now, people are suffering with the results of this activity. Balance ecology is bringing up the rear in our country specifically to the place of Palawan.

Those who want to create a little change or an act to prevent this activity, let us sign to this campaign. Just type in your browser http://www.no2miningpalawan.com. Little by little, we will reach the required number to stop this occupation of such people. God created the earth and its substance for the humankind. Let us not allow our fellow creature to destroy it. It is also enjoyable to have preserved and attractive scenery in our country. Therefore, do not hesitate to sign if you love your nature and mostly, if you love yourself. Please post the website in all social networks to quickly inform your friends concerning this issue. God bless everyone…

  17. paul says:

    Advantages :
Mining will generate employment in the locality. It will also increase income of the district through tax.

    Disadvantages :
Mining will definitely create damage to the environment. Large area of land will be affected and utilized starting from blasting, preparation of tailing ponds & tailing disposals, the crusher plant area, stockpile area for ore materials & waste materials, etc. Chemicals such as mercury and cyanide used in mining will impose health hazards to plants, animals and human. Mining can cause erosion and landslide that will vastly cause death and destroy sorrounding environment like farms, rivers or anybody of waters. Mining chemicals also makes soil not suitable for planting. Damages to environment made by mining industry cannot be restored in the span of 20 years.
